THE GREATEST TRAGEDY, what could that be? Could it be the sinking of the Titanic? No, that is not it even though it was a great tragedy. How about World War I and then a few years later World War II? Certainly these were great tragedies with the loss of so many lives. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the American dropping of the atomic bomb on and Hiroshima brought untold destruction and death, and as bad as it was, it was not the greatest tragedy. The senseless murder of 6 million innocent Jews by the Hitler regime was a terrible tragedy, but it was not the greatest tragedy. Well, how about the terrorist attack by Islamic extremists on September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center twin towers in New York? The unspeakable destruction and suffering caused by those agents of hell could not possibly be described, but it does not qualify as the greatest tragedy. So what then is the greatest tragedy one may ask? THE GREATEST TRAGEDY of all is for a person to pass into eternity without knowing Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour. You see, you are an eternal soul created in the image of God, and as an eternal soul you will live forever. Your present body however, will not live forever – it is only a temporary dwelling to house your soul “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” (Hebrews 9: 27) Death is inevitable; it is a reality of life whether we like it or not. The only question that remains is where you, an eternal soul, will spend eternity. Will it be in God’s heaven with Jesus Christ the Saviour, or in Satan’s hell? . . .
