Description

The word “salvage” may be defined as follows:

1: a. Compensation paid for saving a ship or its cargo from the perils of the sea or for the lives and property rescued in a wreck

  1. The act of saving or rescuing a ship or its cargo
  2. The act of saving or rescuing property in danger (as from fire)

2: a. Property saved from destruction in a calamity (such as a wreck or fire)

  1. Something extracted (as from rubbish) as valuable or useful

Besides the above definitions, there are several synonyms for salvage: Reclaim, redeem, recover, regain, restore, retrieve.

Perhaps you have seen or heard of people picking through trash looking for something useful. On mission trips, I have seen people picking through the trash at the dump site and along the road where trash was dumped. Depending on where one lives, dump picking is not allowed.

Growing up in a small coal mining town, there was a trash dump where we would go to look for soda bottles in good condition. Once found, they were cleaned up and “redeemed” for 2¢ a bottle. For us, that was a lot of money in those days! Anywhere where there are people, there will be a salvage job of some sort taking place. Often something that one person thought was totally useless, another sees it differently by “retrieving” and “restoring” it. We see this happen often with old furniture items and vehicles.

In a very real sense, God is in the salvage business!. . .

This is a 4-page tract.
