For as many years as I can recall I have always heard what people call the Lord’s prayer. It is likely that anybody you ask to recite the Lord’s Prayer, they would probably use the prayer that is found in Matthew Chapter 6 verses 5 through 15. However, if people examine this closely, they will find that it is not the Lord’s Prayer; it is only a Model Prayer. And so, in this brief study, at least I think it will be brief, I would like to look at what is allegedly called the Lord’s Prayer. To begin this study, I will first have the TRUE Lord’s Prayer and then the Model Prayer, the one people call the Lord’s Prayer. The Lord’s Prayer and the Model Prayer will be in their entirety to show the difference between the two. What we find in Matthew Chapter 6 is only a guide prayer that the Lord gave when the disciples asked Him to teach them how to pray. So, we find that it is not a prayer but as I just said, only a model or an outline or a guide on how to pray. Webster’s Dictionary 1828 defines “model” as “A pattern of something to be made; anything of a particular form, shape or construction, intended for imitation; primarily, a small pattern; a form in miniature of something to be made on a larger scale; as the model of a building; the model of a fort.” The main part of this definition is “a pattern of something to be made” and that is what the Model Prayer is about. As we read in Scripture and come to the Gospel of John in Chapter 17, we find the Lord Himself praying before His crucifixion on the Cross of Calvary and that is THE Lord’s Prayer. The reason for including both prayers is to show the difference between the two as I have said. We will look at both prayers beginning first with THE Lord’s Prayer. Then we will look at the Model Prayer verse by verse.

When we get to the Model Prayer, we will have two very lengthy portions by Ironside and Morgan. These will not be to fill space; they will be included because of the value they present. The writings of one man will be at the beginning of the Model Prayer and the other at the end. Because these men are from yesteryear, their phraseology will be a little different than that of today. Also, the spelling of some words will be different. For both the phraseologies and spellings, they will remain unchanged. Most of the commentary sources when quoting a Bible reference abbreviated the respective reference. All of those have been spelled out because some sources did not abbreviate certain references, so we spelled out all reference to be consistent.
