It is not unusual for people to become upset when they do not receive what is rightfully due to them, and that is understandable. Agreed? Sometimes the attitude of “I want what is mine” is taken too far and consequences follow. Think for a moment about justice.
Justice may be defined as “The virtue which consists in giving to everyone what is his due.” Another way to define justice is, “True justice is the impartial and proportional treatment of individuals, ensuring they receive what is rightfully due based on fairness, equity, and moral rightness.” The phrase “his due” means “what a person rightfully deserves, has earned, or is owed by fairness, justice, or effort.”
Justice, when properly administered, dispenses to every person what they rightfully deserve and what they rightfully deserve may not be pleasant. Now consider mercy and what it is. “That benevolence, mildness or tenderness of heart which disposes a person to overlook injuries, or to treat an offender better than he deserves; the disposition that tempers justice and induces an injured person to forgive trespasses and injuries, and to forbear punishment, or inflict less than law or justice will warrant.” [Webster’s Dictionary 1828]
The justice that every one of us deserves is eternal damnation in Hell. Why? “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” {Romans 3:23} All of us are sinners because we were born that way because of the disobedience of Adam in the Garden of Eden. {Genesis 2:16-17; Romans 5:12} Because we are sinners there is one wage [payment] for that. “For the wages of sin is death” {Romans 6:23} That is TRUE justice – “giving to everyone what is his due.” There are those who may argue against this and say it is not so, but the Word of God is final as unbelievers will find out. But wait! Even though justice is demanded by the Word of God, He offers mercy, His mercy that no other can provide.
Mercy, that unmerited favor of God was/is offered to the populace of the world. . . .
