Jews have been looking forward to the coming of Messiah. We read in the Old Testament of numerous prophetic references about Messiah and how and when He would come to earth. One prophetic reference says, “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” [Isaiah 7:14] Immanuel means God. When God makes a promise, He always keeps it, but He keeps it on His timetable and not ours. That is important to remember!
God kept His promise and Messiah did come. We read, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ [Greek Christos, khris-tos’] was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. … And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. … Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” [Matthew 1:18, 21, 23] This prophecy was fulfilled – “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” [Luke 2:11]
