Description

The Lord’s Table or Communion Service, what are they? These are one and the same but with different names. The first reference to this is in Luke 22:19-20: “And he [Jesus Christ] took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance [a future act] of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.” This took place the night before Jesus was crucified and as He and His disciples observed what is called The Last Supper. Jesus was personally telling His disciples that He personally and physically, would shed His blood and die on the Cross of Calvary. The bread and wine that was used were symbolic representations of what would happen to Him; they did NOT have any saving merit. Jesus was crucified [John 19:17-30], buried [John 19:38-42], and three days later He bodily rose from the grave [John 20] and was physically seen of many people before His return to Heaven.
Why would Jesus die on the Cross? “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins [emphasis added] for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;” [Hebrews 10:12}
Whose sins did He die for? For ALL [everyone of us] of humanity! “Wherefore, as by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” [Romans 5:12] Why would He do that for us? “But God commendeth his love [it was God’s love for us] toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” [Romans 5:8] “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any [no one] should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” [2 Peter 3:9]
Will God be too busy to save you? “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” [Romans 10:13]
Will God honor His promise to forgive and save a lost person? “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” [John 3:15]
What proof is there of this? “And this is the record [God’s Word, the Bible], that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. … These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” [1 John 5:11,13]
So, what about the Lord’s Table [communion]? “…That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.” [1 Corinthians 11:23-26]. When we observe Memorial Day, we do so in remembrance of those who gave their lives for the defense and freedom of America. The Lord’s Table [communion] is a memorial service in remembrance of what our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, has done for us. As Christians when we participate in the communion service, we are identifying ourselves with Jesus Christ and what He has done for us at Calvary. Participation in the communion service is NOT to be taken lightly. Scripture warns, …
